How This Template Works

The salary planning workbook helps you plan your department's salary adjustments for the year. Typically, a company will give you a raise pool as a percentage of your department's current salary. You then have the flexibility to allocate raises based on each person's performance and contribution to the company.

This workbook includes the following variables:

1. Department Name

2. Planning Year

3. Avg Raise Percentage

4. Raise Pool (may or may not include promotions)

The columns on the spreadsheet are:

1. Employee Name

2. Position (e.g., Network Engineer II)

3. Current Salary

4. Raise %

5. Raise $ (calculated)

6. New Position

7. Promotion %

8. Promotion $ (calculated)

9. Effective Date

10. New Salary (calculated)

11. Budget Impact (prorated for the current year)

12. Annual Impact (the full impact for the following year)

You'll find that the Budget Impact and Annual Impact differ. For instance, if you give someone a raise in June, then the Budget Impact is half the raise amount (for 6 months), whereas the Annual Impact is the full raise amount (for 12 months). This helps you see the true impact to your budget for the remainder of the current year. Talk to your boss or finance department about whether promotion percentages are included in your allocated raise pool. This varies by company.

What columns are tracked for each employee?

Employee Name, Position, Current Salary, Raise %, Raise Amount, New Position, Promotion %, Promotion Amount, Effective Date, New Salary, Budget Impact (prorated for current year), and Annual Impact (full year effect).

How does the Budget Impact vs Annual Impact calculation work?

Budget Impact shows the prorated amount for the current planning year. For example, a $12,000 raise given in June would show $6,000 Budget Impact (6 months) but $12,000 Annual Impact. This helps with accurate budget planning.
